| Lacrosse
lore…and more
Lacrosse is
rooted in Native American religion, and was played as early as the
1400s—even long before the arrival of the Europeans. It was
often played to settle disputes, and many American Indians still
refer to it as “The Creator’s Game”
The first college
team came into play at New York University in 1877. The first high
school teams were created in 1882, in Massachusetts, New Jersey,
and New Hampshire.
Although the
first official women’s lacrosse game was played in 1890 in
Scotland, the first women’s team in the United States did
not come about until 1926—36 years later.
Legend has it
that the city of La Crosse, Wisconsin was named after lacrosse,
the sport.
