Scary, Hairy, Scaly - Freaky Fruits.
Sandra Muncaster
They may look like strange beings from outer space, or even smell like something died. But the one thing they all have in common is…
…they’re all fruit.
The Scary King of Fruits
What’s green or brown, covered in thorns, grows on trees and can weigh up to 3 kilos? The Durian Fruit, of course.
This wonderfully-weird fruit is found in Southeast Asia and because of its large size has been named “The King of Fruits.” The flesh of the Durian is pale yellow to red and even though it has a mild taste, it’s more known for it’s…er…stench.
That’s right. This funky-fruit has been described as smelling like skunk spray, stale vomit or a rotting corpse. However, that doesn’t stop animals such as mouse deer, orangutans, elephants, and even tigers from feasting on its flesh. And yes, people eat it too.
The Scales of a Dragon
There’s no fire coming from this dragon, it’s a fruit.
The Dragon Fruit is made up of pale yellow to red “scales” on its outer layer – resembling a dragon. Found in Southeast Asia, Mexico, Israel, and Central and South America, this fruit grows on a cactus. It’s also high in vitamin C and tastes like a cross between a pear and a kiwi.
Unlike many other fruits, the seeds of the Dragon Fruit may be eaten with the flesh. But chew them well as your stomach can’t digest them otherwise.
Hair Here Hair There
Would you eat a fruit with hair on it? You would if it was the Rambutan.
This “hairy” fruit is commonly grown on trees around Southeast Asia. The leathery red skin is covered in fleshy spines resembling hair. Its round or oval in shape and is sweet and juicy to the taste buds. However, be careful when you eat the Rambutan as the seeds are mildly poisonous if eaten raw.
Even if you don’t eat the Rambutan as is, it can be found in many jams and also canned.
