TORTOISE VICTORIOUS!
When it comes time to hit the books, take a tip from the tortoise
by Jean Soohoo

In the story “The Tortoise and the Hare,” the tortoise takes small steps all the way to the finish line.  However, the hare takes bigger steps then waits a long while before moving on again. Who wins?  The tortoise by taking small but steady steps.

If you want to get things done well and done fast, it pays to follow in the footsteps of the tortoise. For example, suppose you’ve been assigned to read a book and write a book report and its due in three weeks. You could start on it right away and do a little every day for the next three weeks.  Or you could put it off then spend a couple of days cramming. What would happen? By waiting until the last minute, the hare falls behind and feels stressed. But the tortoise, by continuing with one small step at a time, gets the job done - no sweat!

Winning Tips From the Tortoise

Break it up and get started!

You may not immediately start on something because it seems too hard or you’re not sure where to begin. Make a project look easier by using the “salami method.”

Just like salami is cut into slices making it easier to eat, prepare by breaking up a project into doable small activities—or in other words, small steps! Write down all the little steps you’ll have to take to get the project finished. Then start with a tiny tortoise step! As self-help author Brian Tracy says, “By the yard it’s hard, but by the inch, anything’s a cinch.”

Set it up to keep it up!

Prepare yourself by choosing a specific time and place to do your homework or any project you want to complete. You might choose four o’clock (a time) to do your homework on the kitchen table (a place). You could spend fifteen minutes on your math then another fifteen minutes on your spelling.

It works better to show up at the same time and place regularly (every day, if possible), spending a small amount of time, rather than show up just twice a week and cram. Try it and you’ll see, just like the tortoise, you will reach the finish line faster - small yet steady steps wins the race.
