Black-headed
Python
The
slithering python feeds on small lizards and other snakes.
Though it’s not venomous, it kills its victims by
constriction. Talk about a tight squeeze!
Frilled
Lizard
This
reptile has a frill of skin that normally hangs around the
animal’s neck and shoulders. When threatened by a
bird of prey, it raises its frill, which makes its head
look five times bigger. The lizard also opens its mouth
wide and hisses, scaring off the predator.

Saltwater
Crocodile
As
the largest reptile in the world, the saltwater croc can
grow up to 28 feet long—almost four times as tall
as Shaquille O’Neal.
Northern
Leaf-Tailed Gecko
This
gecko lives in the tropical forests of Australia. To hide
from hungry predators, its body is camouflaged to look like
the bark of a tree. Plus, this lizard can regenerate its
limbs when needed. That means if it loses its tail, it can
grow a new one.
Thorny
Devil
The
thorny devil makes its home in the Australian desert. It
moves very slowly and can’t run from its enemies.
To keep from being eaten, the reptile relies on sharp spines
that cover its entire body.
Queensland
Cane Toad
This
toad was introduced to Australia to eat insect pests that
were attacking the sugar cane crop. In fact, this scavenger
will eat just about anything it can swallow. Open wide!
