Homemade Macaroni and Cheese

Surprise your family by dishing up this classic entrée with a twist—instead of opening a box, you’re starting from scratch. Mac and cheese is an easy, delicious meal: just remember to ask an adult for help when using the stove!

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 teaspoons butter
  • 7 teaspoons all purpose flour
  • 1 1/3 cups milk
  • 8 ounces grated cheddar cheese (2 cups)
  • 1 box (7 to 8 ounces) dried macaroni
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  1. In a saucepan, melt butter over low heat. Put in the flour and cook the mixture, stirring for 3 minutes.
Add the milk in a stream, while still stirring. Bring the mixture to a boil and simmer (on lower heat) for 3 minutes.
  2. Stir in the cheese and cook until the cheese is melted.
  3. Cook the macaroni according to package instructions and drain well. Combine with the cheese mixture, and add salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Carefully spoon the cheesy pasta onto plates while it’s still piping hot.
  5. Serve with broccoli for a well-rounded meal.
