Abraham Lincoln

LincolnMost of us know that Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States. And that he built the Republican Party into a strong organization. And even that he was reelected to serve a second term only to be assassinated a year later.

But did you know that Abe's mother died when he was only ten? Or that he only went to school a few weeks of his entire life because he had to work on his father's farm? Or that his first job was splitting wooden rails for fences?

Still Abe worked hard and learned how to read and write. Maybe that's why he believed that anyone (no matter what race, religion, or gender) could do anything they set their mind to.

Famous Quote from Honest Abe:

"Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal." Lincoln's Gettysburg Address on November 19, 1863.

Other Fun Facts:

  • He was the tallest president—6' 4"
  • His favorite sport was wrestling
  • Lincoln, Nebraska was named after him
  • The actor Tom Hanks is related to Abraham Lincoln's mother
  • He got the nickname "Honest Abe" because when he worked as a clerk, he gave a customer the wrong change, then tracked the man down to give him back what he'd overpaid
  • Lincoln once dreamed he would die. A week later, he was shot and killed.
  • Abraham Lincoln’s dog Fido attended his funeral.
